PRIMARY DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES

Hiring Salary for this position is $87,509-$109,386/Annually.

OVERVIEW OF POSITION / DEPARTMENT

The Crime Analyst Supervisor oversees a team of crime analysts who conduct tactical, operational, intelligence, strategic, statistical, and administrative analysis on pertinent law enforcement data. The Crime Analyst Supervisor consults with and provides top level management with data analysis and/or statistics necessary to inform organizational planning and drive decision-making processes and makes recommendations to improve operations and services related to police data and analysis. The Crime Analyst Supervisor works to develop and grow the unit's data analysis capabilities with a focus on innovation and adoption and/or adaptation of techniques and technologies. A major goal of the Crime Analyst Supervisor is to improve and make advancements in crime analysis functions as well as efficiency in current and future data collection enriches the Crime Analyst Unit, the Aurora Police Department, the City of Aurora, and the citizens it serves.

PRIMARY DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES
  • Supervise day to day operations of the Crime Analyst Unit and its employees.
  • Participates in the selection, hiring, strategic goals and performance evaluations of Crime Analysts.
  • Plan, prioritize, assign, and review unit activities.
  • Develop or modify work plans, methods, and procedures and determine work priorities.
  • Evaluate performance of crime analysts and complete mid-year and annual evaluations.
  • Train current and new analysts in data acquisition and analytical techniques and methodologies.
  • Orients staff with appropriate policies, standards, and procedures, and ensures that work conforms to departmental standards.
  • Assesses analysts' technical and analytical abilities and/or deficiencies as well as provide or suggest training to enhance or improve skills.
  • Assist analysts to achieve performance standards and identify opportunities for improvement related to performance standards.
  • Serves on committees that build relationships with managers, stakeholders and partnering agencies to determine effective methods for data capture and usage requirements as well as efficient methods for conducting analysis and dissemination of products.
  • Provide work instruction and assist employees with difficult or unusual assignments.
  • Recommend changes in practices and procedures to increase operating efficiency and expedite workflow.
  • Perform specialized analytical work to include projects that have major policy implications.
  • Use a variety of computer applications and multiple databases to conduct complex crime analysis.
  • Apply best practices to query, collect, analyze, interpret, evaluate, and disseminate police data.
  • Participate in crime analysis software/database selection.
  • Design, manage, and conduct quality assurance on internal and external relational databases.
  • Respond to ad hoc requests for crime information for the Chief of Police, executive staff, and city personnel.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS & WORKING CONDITIONS

An equivalent combination of education, training, and experience that demonstrates required knowledge, skills, and abilities may be considered.

Education:
  • Bachelor's degree in criminal justice, criminology, or directly related field with courses in research, statistics, and crime analysis.
Experience:
  • At least 5 years of experience in criminal justice planning or law enforcement as a research specialist with a large law enforcement or public safety agency.

Preferred Qualifications:
  • At least 2 years' experience supervising or leading other employees in a judicial or law enforcement environment.

Knowledge:
  • Knowledge of crime analysis and criminal justice functions as related to police department practices and procedures.
Skills:
  • Skill in the use of personal computers and database, word processing, and spreadsheet software programs.
  • Possess interpersonal skills related to speaking and interacting with fellow employees in a positive manner.
Abilities:
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with employees and citizens; communicate effectively both orally and in writing; make presentations; and accurately analyze data.
  • Ability to help other employees achieve greater knowledge, understanding and application of their duties.
  • Ability to direct and effectively supervise employees.
  • Ability to be a subject matter expert on crime analysis for the department.

Licenses and Certifications:
  • NCIC/CCIC certification preferred.

Essential Personnel:
  • When a local announcement of emergency or disaster is declared by the city, all City of Aurora employees may be required to work as essential personnel.

Physical Demands:
  • Sedentary physical work that involves moving no more than 10 pounds at a time with or without assistance.
  • Occasional lifting, carrying, walking, and standing.
  • Vision to analyze data and read and interpret reports, documents, and other written information.
  • Hand/eye coordination for operation of computer keyboard
  • Speech communication, hearing and listening to maintain communication with employees and citizens.

Work Environment:
  • Works in a clean, comfortable environment.

Equipment Use:
  • Personal computer and office other equipment.
  • This position may require the incumbent to occasionally use personal equipment (e.g. vehicle, cell phone, tools, etc.) in the course of their employment.
