PRIMARY DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES

Hiring Range for this position is: $33.69-$42.12/Hourly

This is classified as VHBE (Variable Hour Benefit Eligible), where the selected candidate will work an average of 40 hours per week. The selected candidate will be eligible to elect Medical Benefits as well as accrue paid time off and receive 11 paid holidays.

The Aurora Police Department seeks to hire an ambitious Crime Analyst for a position within the AuroraSAVE Group Violence Intervention (GVI) program and Investigative Division. The selected candidate will work in an environment of high demand, performing crime and intelligence analysis duties related to group violence and developing analysis products in support of AuroraSAVE with both internal and external stakeholders. The position requires an analyst with a passion for police related data and intelligence, and knowledge of processes and procedures used to obtain data, conduct dynamic analysis and compile statistics to support an evidence based violent crime reduction strategy focused on high-risk youth and young adults involved in gun crime.

PRIMARY DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITES:
  • Use a variety of computer applications, electronic spreadsheets, mapping software, word processing, and statistical applications to conduct analysis.
  • Use EXCEL macros or other similar editing techniques on crime data to analyze, format, simplify, and present findings.
  • Identify and collect data factors using a variety of police reports to track patterns, forecast trends, and report actionable findings that inform resource deployment
  • Query public safety databases (RMS, NCIC/CCIC, Accurint, Lumen, LinX, etc.) to collect, analyze, interpret, evaluate and disseminate crime, arrest, intelligence, operational, and procedural data using modern data and program analysis techniques.
  • Conduct analysis relating to modus operandi, spatial, temporal, and statistical factors.
  • Correlate new information with existing information to identify emerging, evolving or existing patterns, series, and hotspot activity.
  • Attend team meetings to receive and provide relevant information.
  • Work to identify new solutions to connect data to strategic decision-making and resource deployment.
  • Prepare real time analysis, monthly summaries; publish and disseminate said materials as requested.
  • Clearly present information about analysis and findings to internal and external partners who do not have a background in analysis .
  • Compile, create, and present materials used for problem-solving meetings to inform police executives, consent decree monitors, and other entities as needed.
  • Prepare PowerPoint presentations, maps, graphs, charts, tables and other illustrative devices that organize and simplify information to support investigations, police administration, and quarterly annual reports.
  • Utilize ArcMAP/ArcPRO to prepare a variety of map products as well as to conduct geospatial analysis on public safety data.
  • Connect with data analysts and crime analysts internal and external to the city to facilitate a cooperative relationship that enhances support of public safety and facilitates and furthers investigative leads for law enforcement.
  • Participate in the maintenance of data integrity, validate results, identify potential issues and use appropriate strategies to resolve discrepancies or report issues.
  • Write queries to extract, clean, and validate data for reports, charts, and graphs.
  • Respond to ad hoc requests for information.
  • Conduct research and analysis on subjects' histories, associates, group affiliations, addresses, vehicles, etc.
  • Monitor and collect data and intelligence
  • Assume additional duties as assigned.

  • Proficiency and familiarity with navigating social media platforms and ability to maintain a presence for monitoring activity, collecting evidence and intelligence through open-source intelligence applications.
  • Ability to work effectively and respectfully communicate with internal and external law enforcement partners as a liaison between AuroraSAVE, APD and our stakeholders.
  • Proficiency with SQL and SSRS sufficient to identify errors in reports programmed by others.
  • Proficiency with ArcPRO.
  • Able to work independently, prioritize multiple projects, set realistic expectations for project completion and meet those deadlines.
  • Able to interact positively, professionally, and diplomatically with people at all levels of the agency and with external partners.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS & WORKING CONDITIONS

Education:
  • Bachelor's Degree in Computer Science, Data Science, Criminal Justice, Statistics, Mathematics, Information Systems, Statistics, AcAtuarial Science, Business Administration, or other related field with course work in crime analysis, research methods, and statistics.
Experience:
  • Two (2) years of experience as a crime and or intelligence analyst at a municipal police department, sheriff's office, or federal law enforcement agency.
  • Technical skills and experience related to the use of data, relational databases, software and technical troubleshooting.
Preferred Experience:
  • Experience conducting administrative, tactical, and or investigative analysis and compiling statistics.
  • Experience using ACCESS, SQL or SSRS to design and build relational database queries.
  • Familiarity with commonly used law enforcement or public safety software, applications and databases.
  • Experience with open-source intelligence gathering and creating and maintaining covert profiles.
  • Creating individual and or organization link charts to connect incidents, people and social networks.
  • Aptitude of technical skills and technical analysis to troubleshoot technological equipment.
Licenses and Certifications:
  • NCIC/CCIC certification preferred
  • This position may require the incumbent to occasionally use personal equipment (e.g. vehicle, cell phone, tools, etc.) in the course of their employment

Knowledge:
  • Knowledge of analytical skills and techniques used for data analysis.
  • Knowledge of Microsoft Office programs and relational databases.
  • Knowledge of mapping software, intelligence applications and open source sites used to identify pertinent information and conduct analysis.

Abilities:
  • Able to establish and maintain working relationships with others in law enforcement and intelligence communities, City of Aurora employees and its citizens.

  • Skilled in the use of personal computers, databases, software programs and applications.
